Once Emperor Akbar went hunting with some of his soldiers. While hunting, all of them came far ahead in the forest and lost their way. Even after immense efforts, he could not find a way to go to Agra Rajmahal .

Slowly the evening started to fall. Everyone's condition became bad due to hunger and thirst. But they did not stop and kept moving forward on the basis of speculation. In some time they all reached a crossroads. They expected that there must be a way to the palace, but which one? It was necessary to know this.

No such person was visible nearby, from whom the way could be asked. Everyone was looking around worriedly. Only then the king's vision fell on a child, who was coming towards him.

On coming near, Emperor Akbar asked the child, “Child! Just tell me, which road leads to Agra?

Hearing the king's question, the boy laughed and said, "Sir! The road doesn't go anywhere. You will have to go."

Emperor Akbar was greatly impressed by his boldness and eloquence and being pleased said to him, “You seem to be very eloquent, boy. What's your name?"

"My name Mahesh Das sir and your name?" The boy answered with aplomb and also asked a question.

Smiling Akbar replied, "You are talking to Akbar, the Emperor of India."

Knowing this, the child bowed his head and greeted Emperor Akbar.

Akbar took out the diamond ring from his finger and gave it to the child and said, “Child, we are very happy to see your eloquence and fearlessness. Come to our palace and show us this ring. We will recognize you immediately and reward you. Come on, now tell me which way is the way to Agra?

The boy took the ring and told him the way to Agra.

Time passed and Mahesh Das became young. One day he thought of going to the king's palace to meet him and took the ring given by him and left his house.

 

He was surprised after reaching the palace. Seeing the luxurious palace made of precious stones and decorated with excellent carvings, his eyes were left torn. After gazing at the palace for a while, when he was about to go inside, the gatekeeper at the door stopped him, “Wait! How are you going inside like this?  

 

Showing the ring given by Emperor Akbar, Mahesh Das said to the doorman, “Sir! I want to meet Jahanpanah.

 

Darban agreed to allow him to enter the palace, but on the condition that he would give him half of whatever reward the king would give him. Birbal accepted the condition.

After entering the palace, he reached the court of Emperor Akbar. After saluting King Salamat, he showed him the ring, recognizing which the King said, “Hey! You are the same child who showed us the way.

 

"Yes sir"

 

"Speak, what do you want in prize?"

 

"Jahanpanah, I want you to give me 100 lashes as a reward." Mahesh Das humbly requested.

 

Emperor Akbar was stunned after hearing this request, “What are you saying? How can we flog you without any crime?"

 

"Sir, I want only 100 whips as a prize."

 

Akbar had to bow down to the stubbornness of Mahesh Das and he ordered the executioner, "100 lashes should be applied to Mahesh Das."

The executioner started whipping Mahesh Das. As soon as he completed 50 lashes, Mahesh Das said, “Bas Huzoor! This was my reward. I have to give half of the prize to your concierge as per my promise. That's why 50 lashes should be applied to him.

By saying this, Birbal gave the full details of the conversation with the doorman to Emperor Akbar for entering the palace. Hearing this, there was laughter in the court. Emperor Akbar made the gatekeeper get 100 lashes instead of 50.

Seeing the intelligence of Mahesh Das, he said, “Mahesh! Because of your intelligence, from today you will be called 'Birbal'. And while including him in his Navratnas, appointed him as his chief advisor. 

In this way Birbal became Akbar 's special friend.
