The Hare On The Moon Story

Four friends rabbit, monkey, jackal and beaver lived in the forest on the banks of the Ganges. All of them had the intention of attaining virtue by becoming a donor. One day there was a discussion about charity among all four and they decided that they would all do Param-Daan on the day of Uposath. Uposatha is the day of religious festival of Buddhism. According to the belief of Buddhism, by donating on this auspicious day, one gets the full fruit of the donation.

As soon as the dawn broke on the day of Uposatha, the four friends went to the forest in search of food. The monkey was in search of sweet fruits, jumping from one tree to another. A tree was laden with juicy mangoes. He plucked some mangoes from them and returned to his home. The jackal went to the nearby village and stole a pot of curd and a piece of meat from a house there. Udbilav did not have to go far, he found seven red fishes on the banks of the Ganges and he happily returned home with them.

On the other hand, the rabbit who came out in the forest started thinking that there is no point in donating the grass and leaves that he takes as food to his beggar. To get the full result of charity, it would be appropriate to donate to oneself. So he returned home empty handed.

The decision of the rabbit to donate himself shook all the three worlds. Sakak means the throne of Indra started shaking. Finally, Indra decided to go to the house of those four friends to test their charity.

Indra dressed as a beggar and reached the houses of all the four one by one. First of all they reached the jackal's house, the jackal offered them dahi handi and meat in charity. But they came to the beaver's house without receiving it. Udbilav offered them red fish as a donation. But, he did not even accept that donation. On going to the monkey's house, the monkey wanted to donate juicy mangoes to him, but he refused that donation. At last they reached the rabbit's house. The rabbit looked at the petitioner and said, "Respected, I offer myself in charity. Please accept my donation."

After that he lit a stove. Then stroke the hairs of his body three times, so that the creatures of the hairs come out and they do not have to burn in the fire along with it. After that he jumped into the fireplace.

Indra had never seen such charity of any living being. He was astonished. They understood that the rabbit is a true giant. The rabbit that jumped into the fire was waiting for its life. But, due to the illusion of Indra, that fire could not burn him.

Indra sang praises of the rabbit and made a mark on the moon by crushing a mountain of the moon. He said to the rabbit, “I am very pleased with your charity and bravery. As long as there is a mark on the moon, your name will remain immortal, and your charity will be remembered.
