Story of Ruru Mrig

The golden colored ruru deer used to live in the deep forest. Aura like sapphire, emerald and pearl used to emanate from his body. Her silky hair, sky blue eyes and beautiful horns fascinate the mind. The one who saw her filling the kunchals, would have been overwhelmed by the beauty.

Ruru the deer was intelligent, judicious and kind. His beauty, his manners, his behavior made him an extraordinary deer. His biggest feature was that he used to talk in human language.

One day he was roaming freely in the forest that he heard the cry of a person. Going in that direction, he saw that a man was flowing in the fast current of the river. Ruru was fully aware of human nature. He knew that human is a greedy and selfish creature, for his selfishness he sacrifices even human compassion.

Despite knowing that this nature of human can harm him, his heart overflowed with compassion. Without delay he jumped into the river and while swimming reached the drowning man and said, “Human, hold my feet firmly. I'll take you to the shore."

Instead of holding the legs of Ruru deer, the frightened person climbed on its back. In this situation, it was difficult for the Ruru deer to swim, even then it did not pull the person off its own back by jerking it, but with patience it carried him on its back and took it to the shore despite suffering. The person's life was saved. When he wanted to thank Ruru Mrig, Ruru Mrig said –

“Manav, if you really want to thank me, then go to your city and do not tell anyone about me. If people come to know about my specialities, they will no doubt desire to catch me. In this way my free life will be destroyed.

Saying this, Ruru went to the deer forest and the person returned to his city.

After a few days, the queen of the king of that kingdom had a vision of Ruru deer in her dream. Enchanted by her beauty, the queen could not remove her from her heart for many days. The desire to get that beautiful antelope arose in his mind and he expressed his desire to the king. To fulfill the wish of his queen, the king made a big noise in the whole kingdom that whoever helps in finding the deer seen in the dream by the queen, he will be gifted a village and ten beautiful girls.

When the person who had saved the life of Ruru Mrig heard this announcement of the king, forgetting his gratitude, he immediately reached the king and informed about the residence of Ruru Mrig.

The king reached the forest with the soldiers, where the Ruru deer resided. His soldiers surrounded the residence of Ruru Mrig. Ruru deer had no way of escape. He came before the king. The king was surprised to see him. His image was like the deer seen by the queen in her dream. He pointed his bow and arrow at Ruru deer.

Then Ruru the deer asked the king in the language of a man, "Rajan, whether you capture me or kill me, but first tell me who told you about my abode?"

That person was with the king at that time. The king turned the direction of the arrow towards him. Seeing that ungrateful person, Ruru Mrig said –

"Take out the wooden block from the water, never take out an ungrateful man."

The king did not understand the meaning of Ruru Mrig's statement. On being asked, Ruru Mrig told the whole story of that person drowning in the river and saving him. Hearing the whole story, a feeling of compassion awakened in the king's heart as well. He apologized to Ruru deer and in a fit of rage shot an arrow at him to kill the ungrateful man.

Seeing this, Ruru again showing compassion to the deer, prayed to the king to forgive that person. The king accepted the prayer and did not kill that person. Before leaving for his kingdom, he invited Ruru Mrig to visit the palace as a guest, which Ruru Mrig happily accepted. Ruru stayed in the hospitality of the deer king for a few days and returned to the forest again.
